I found this recipe in the Costco Connection and since I had most all of the ingredients, I made it for dinner. However, since I goofed a bit, I'm not sure how it's really supposed to taste. I'm guilty of glancing at a recipe, then assuming I know what was in there. I saw one cup of quinoa and thought it said two cups of water. I didn't have exactly one cup, so added a mixture I have of quinoa and sprouted rice. I got it boiling for some 10 minutes, THEN read the recipe. It said only 1 1/3 c. water. I peeked at the pan and it had too much...

I’m going to cheat this week and use a recipe I have used before. For several reasons, of which one is, it is a good dessert for this time of year: very lemony. I made this not too long ago and realized I had picked up two instant lemon puddings instead of one pudding and one Jello. I had a large box of lime Jello and used half of that. It was not a good idea. The lime flavor canceled out the lemon flavor so that neither one came thru. Zucchini are coming on so if you have any good recipes, please share. I have done the Chocolate Zucchini C...
Ten Years Ago July 19, 2007 Grain growers in the Touchet Valley and surrounding countryside should be harvesting in full swing by this weekend. Throughout this week, local farmers started cutting to get the 2007 harvest under way, said J.E. McCaw, manager of the local branch of Northwest Grain Growers. An early sense of this year’s crop indicate that yield ranges from fair to excellent, McCaw said, though reports of yields have shown a wide range. Less than 20 years after the first settlers came to the Touchet Valley in 1859, the forebears o...

My friend, JoAnn, shared her mother-in-law, Marie Poolman's, recipe with me. She said she tried her first piece in 1964. I don't know which impressed me more, that she remembered the date of her first taste of the pie, or realizing that the recipe went back that far. Since I was having dinner guests, I had a good reason to make it and let you know firsthand how it came out. Mile High is a great description! JoAnn said Marie would dress up a served piece with a sliced, fanned strawberry, a piece...
Ten Years Ago July 12, 2007 Shubi Broom, a talking Budgie Parakeet that was immortalized in a children’s book written and illustrated by Kathelene’ Joyce of Milton-Freewater, escaped and is lost somewhere around Waitsburg and environs. The unique bird has been a member of Jeff and Gayle Broom’s household for a couple years and escaped when the cage door accidentally opened while being carried into the broom home on 10th...

* It was American journalist and political satirist P.J. O’Rourke who made the following sage observation: “No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we’re looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.” * If you’re like many Americans, you celebrate the Fourth of July by cooking out. In fact, it’s estimated that in the United States, 150 million hot dogs and 700 million pounds of chicken are consumed on that single d...
Back in the saddle, as "they" say, where I come from (Montana). A huge thank you for Dena for sharing her grandma Violet's recipe. I smiled when Dena shared that her grandma took recipes out of magazines in the waiting room. I gave her a high five! I love to read the stories and share ideas behind the recipes. Many of my recipes have also come from my boys' great-grandma. I sometimes wonder how many generations we will share recipes before we enter the Jetson age. If you have a favorite recipe y...

Teeny is on vacation so I (Dena) am filling in for her. She's asked repeatedly if I have any good recipes and I've told her that my grandma's bean recipe is a favorite. Unfortunately, I keep forgetting to send it to her. (She even made a subtle reference to that in her column a couple of weeks ago.) Anyway, I told her I'd handle things while she's on vacation. I think she's still skeptical since she sent in a "repeat" recipe "in case of emergency." (At least she's polite about it!) My recipe...
