Before the TV reality show that had little to do with its title, the simple life was one wise people have lived for thousands of years. It involves a lot of thinking, a sense of gratitude, and an appreciation for day-to-day elements which we tend to take for granted – especially in a corporate-based society emphasizing the over possession of advertised products to achieve happiness.

But happiness, as Dixie artist Ellen Heath knows, has nothing to do with owning a particular model of car, dressing like a pop culture icon, or wearing perfume named after a celebrity who probably doesn't use the stuff. A walk in the country, two kittens playing, sunlight dappling on a grazing horse, flowers in the meadow – the simple things that bring happiness are endearing, and enduring.

"I want people to catch a glimpse of the beauty and joy that I see in the world around us," the watercolor artist, who creates note card sets and prints of her country-themed works, says.

"I know all is not this way, but I hope people get a warm, good feeling inside when they look at my paintings – perhaps a happy memory, or a favorite person or place will flit through people's thoughts. Perhaps their day will be a bit brighter."

Through Saturday, April 21, Wenaha Gallery is showcasing a selection of Heath's note cards, prints and original art, celebrating the world of country and the lifestyle of the real and genuine.

The gallery, located at 219 East Main in Dayton, is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and invites people in to see the beauty.

As Heath says, "It may not sound very deep and artsy, but I guess my subject is happiness."

What an excellent topic to paint.
