Joelle (l) and Brad Huffman before the CDA Ironman race last month.

"I finished, but it was by far the hardest thing I've ever done. I had to throw all my plans out the window. The swim and the bike went great but I started getting severe cramps at the end of the bike. During my run I could not drink or eat anything without throwing up every few miles. With no nutrition or hydration for six hours I bonked hard and fighting bad leg cramps. I had to forget about having a respectable time and put all my energy into just getting it done. I really couldn't have done it without the encouragement of Shawn Pichette who stuck with me for many puking miles and Joe Schindler who ran back into the dark to make sure I was ok and talked me back to the finish. Joelle was my rock and was always there when I came through screaming encouragement and getting me through it. I knewI was going to do it but I didn't fathom the pain it would take to get it done. I am an Ironman but it was not pretty."

This was the last full Ironman to be held in Coeur d'Alene, though the city will continue to host an annual half-Ironman.
