Waitsburg's Landon Callas clears a hurdle during a meet last year.

MILTON-FREEWATER – Dayton and Waitsburg track teams traveled to Milton-Freewater on Friday to take part in the "Carnival of Speed" track and field meet.

Waitsburg senior Emily Adams brought home two first-place medals. She won the 800 meters, with a time of 2:26.86, and the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet. Adam's time of 22:08.68 was good enough to put her in second place in the 3000 meter.

Freshman Kirsten Miller was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles for Waitsburg, with a time of 55.20. She was eighth in the 110 hurdles, at 20.94.

Waitsburg coach Ann Adams said, "I am very proud of how the girls competed today. The weather was less than ideal, but they still worked hard and made some record marks. Emily's PR in the 3000m was a 32 second improvement from last year. That is big."

The Cardinal girls tied Weston McEwen for 8th placed with a combined score of 31 points.

For the Waitsburg boys, Landon Callas had two first-place finishes. He won the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles, with times of 15.79 and 41.45.

Callas took second in the 100-meter dash, with a time of 12.28. TJ Morrison placed eighth in the 110 hurdles, with a time of 19.37.

Daltin Lambert was the Cardinals only boys distance runner, competing in both the 800 and 1500-meter races. He placed 26th in the 800, with a PR time of 2:37.67, and 31st in the 1500, with another PR time of 5:36.31.

Although Dayton had a small crew due to spring break, Dayton senior, Jennifer Warren set a personal record and placed 10th in the triple jump with a distance of 27-10.75. She also added more than 7 feet to her previous PR in the discus, despite a significant head wind, for a throw of 64-04.

"At this point in the season, I'm looking for people to be making progress in terms of speed and endurance, said Dayton Coach Dan Nechodom They're getting technique down better, and are building their body's ability to handle the forces necessary for high speed and hard throwing and jumping. That progress is showing itself in a nice upward trend for most athletes."

Nechodem went on to praise the perfomances of Warren and Wyatt Johnson. Johnson achieved a personal record in the 1500 meters, with a time of 5:22.77.
