Waitsburg's Devon Harshman puts up a shot during a game at home against Pomeroy last season.

WAITSBURG – New Waitsburg girls' basketball coach Roy Ramirez says he looks forward to working with his new team and in its new 1B division league.

He says that even though one of his team's league opponents is Colton, which has won the state girls' 1B championship for eight consecutive years (that's not a typo).

"They're a tough team," Ramirez said. Ramirez praised several of his team's upcoming opponents, including Pomeroy, Oakesdale and Touchet.

Ramirez, who also serves as assistant coach for the Waitsburg boys' team, was hired to take over the Lady Cardinals about a week before the team's first game last Saturday in Grangeville against Cle Elum/Roslyn.

Ramirez said that about 15 girls have turned out for basketball in Waitsburg this year, and he hopes to suit up ten for the varsity each week.

He begins the season with a starting lineup that includes: Devon Harshman, Taylor Hays, Analise Araya, Chloe Pearson and Ariel Sandau. "It's likely that we will make adjust ments as the season progresses," Ramirez said.

"The girls are learning a new system and it'll take some time," he said. "They're working really hard, and I'm sure we'll have continued improvement through the middle and later part of the season."
