Homecoming King Jeremy Nichols and Queen Jessica Elliott were announced at the Homecoming 2006 Dance last Saturday night. Members of the Court included: Felicia Brown, Tyson Cole, Shawny Ingle, John Gertsch, Danielle Coila, Conner Talbott, Nichols, Elliott, Jessica Mason, Cole Janovich, Savanna Marick, and Aaron Leal.

Competition was stiff for the Waitsburg Cross Country team, competing in a 3.1 mile race in Pomeroy on Oct. 12. The highest finisher for the Cards was Maya Garcia, who finished fourth in 23:55. Teammate Heidi Potolicchio was 16th in 28:14. There were 25 girls competing.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

October 17. 1991

The discussion turned lively Tuesday as the Waitsburg Commercial Club hosted a forum on the $2.6 million school bond election Nov. 5. Waitsburg schools superintendent Ed Larsen took the podium for about a half hour to say why he intends to vote yes to revamp the World War 2-vintage grade school.

The school’s food program, known as Laura’s Lunches, may be too successful. “Laura has always done an outstanding job,” said grade school principal Glynn Davis.”We are known as one of the best hot-lunch programs in the area.”

For the first time in years, the school district has the makings of a stringed orchestra – a quartet of students. Rebecca Menino, Waitsburg’s new music teacher, has four students playing stringed instruments. She hopes that by next year they can play at the Fall Festival at the Bruce House.

Fifty Years Ago

October 13, 1966

It was a proud day for the community of Waitsburg when Larry Broom, local businessman and civic leader, was names “WSU Dad of the Year” at a rally held in Pullman on Friday night, October 7.

Orin Walker and Loren Dumas will present a program to Commercial Club on Tuesday, October 18, on the possible rerouting of Highway 410. A suggestion has been made to the State Highway Commission to combine the proposed Waitsburg bypass with a new Walla Walla-Waitsburg route along the middle road.

The Progressive Club entertained newcomers to Waitsburg, other club members and the Teachers, Tuesday, October 11th, in the Dorcas room of the Christian Church. Guests were greeted by officers of the Club and given name tags. A musical program was presented by the Exits, Randy Pearson on his electric organ, and Mrs. Roy Leid and Mrs. Roger Hevel.

Oct. 17, 1941

The dwelling of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Vining on Jay Street was totally destroyed by fire Monday evening.

The Waitsburg Choral Club under the direction of Mrs. Wilma Lewis, and accompanied by Mrs. Frances Johnson again will sponsor a musical program to be given at the Methodist Church, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m.

Lewis Patton, who mistakenly shot a doe deer near Godman Springs last week and voluntarily reported the accident and turned in the carcass, his hunting license and gun were confiscated and he was fined $250 and costs Monday by Justice Joe Range, of Dayton, who suspended all but $10 of the fine and costs of $250.

One Hundred Years Ago

October 20, 1916

Miss Harriet Stewart will represent Waitsburg at the Walla Walla Harvest Festival this week. The Queen of the Festival is Miss Hattie Jones and Vincent Borleske, graduate manager of Athletics at Whitman College was elected king.

The Waitsburg high school football team won its second game of this season, Friday afternoon, defeating the high school team from Touchet, 72-0.

Born at Huntsville Oct. 13 to Mr. and Mrs. Wade Wolfe, a son.

Miss Nellie Atkinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Atkinson, entertained a number of her school friends at the Atkinson home, Preston Avenue, Saturday evening.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

October 23, 1891

We are not particularly “stuck” on winter weather, but we would like to see one “cold snap” of sufficient intensity to completely cook the prestiperous house fly.

Died at Texarkana, Ark, Charles C. Lloyd, son of A. G. Lloyd, Oct. 11, 1891; buried at Rosehill Cemetery, Oct. 13. Born July 10, 1867.

The Maxwell Bros of Alto, have had their herd of well-known Seven Hills cattle dehorned. The dehorning idea is becoming quite popular in this country.

Master Will Tucker last Wednesday found a bank bill on the street. The owner is welcome to it.
