Port deems second annual event a success

The rain clouds disappeared, and the sun came out just in time for Saturday's second annual Oktoberfest.

DAYTON – Brad McMasters, Economic Development Coordinator for the Port of Columbia, said the rain ended just as he was putting the finishing touches on the children's bounce house at last Saturday's Oktoberfest celebration at the Blue Mountain Station in Dayton.

The Dayton Kiwanis and the Dayton Lions increased their sales of Tucannon Meats' bratwurst and Chief Springs Fire and Irons' beer over last year, McMasters said.

The Blue Mountain Station Co-op Market's German potato salad and German red cabbage were also big hits, selling out early on, McMasters said.

"The event allowed for a great, end-of-the-season venue for food and craft vendors, as well as other small home-based businesses. . . The co-op market was filled with fresh local produce, natural foods, crafts and other products," said McMasters.

Mary's Candies, a tenant at the Blue Mountain Station, was busy with sales of ice cream, caramel apples and other treats. And Rusty Figgins, owner of Blue Mountain Affinage, was on hand to share samples of his cave-aged blue cheese, Coppei Copper Honey and information about his distillery, XO Alambic.

"I'm excited to build on this event," McMasters said. "The locals who attended seemed to really enjoy it, and the generous sponsorship from Pacific Power allowed us to increase marketing this year. It showed by the amount of newcomers to the Food Park."

Oktoberfest was organized by the Blue Mountain Station Co-op, and sponsored by Pacific Power and the Port of Columbia.
