Keeping Kids Busy

Pairing high school kids with businesses, Summer Youth Program, Teen Scene Program

DAYTON - Andrew Holt of the Dayton Chamber of Commerce and Dayton High School Principal Paul Shaber have been working on creating an internship program, pairing high school students with businesses.

The idea is to offer students experience in the work world, and provide a little extra help for businesses, Holt said.

The internships can be paid or unpaid, and they can be ongoing, into the school year, Shaber said.

Students will have to go through the application and interview process with the business owner, he said.

The Summer Youth Program and Teen Scene is being offered to local youth again this summer, according to Laura Tolman at the Blue Mountain Counseling Center.

Adult volunteers are needed for both programs, Tolman said.

The Summer Youth Program is for first through fifth graders, and will begin on June 20 and run until July 29, Tolman said.

Summer Youth Program activities will include swimming, trips to the park, a Liberty Theater movie day, puppets, origami, slip and slide days, crafts, and a variety of workshops, and much more. Kids taking swimming lessons, will be chaperoned to and from the City Pool, she said.

Breakfast, lunch and two snacks are included.

The cost for the Summer Youth Program is $75 per child.

Teen Scene, for sixth graders and students up to age eighteen, will run from June 21 through July 28, and will take place on Tuesdays through Thursdays, Tolman said.

Some of the activities are; black light bowling, black light laser tag, miniature golf, and out of town trips, one of which will be to the waterpark in Clarkston.

There will be a one-time fee of $50 for all out of town activities, she said.

There is also a Hells Canyon jet boat tour planned with a one-time fee of $25 for that, she said.

Registration forms for the Summer Youth Program or Teen Scene can be obtained from the Blue Mountain Counseling Center at 221 East Washington Avenue. For further information, or to volunteer, call Laura Tolman at 382-1164.
