Ten Years Ago

June 1, 2006

Kami Stringham, valedictorian of the Waitsburg High School Class of 2006, will speak at Commencement Exercises at 8 p.m., Friday, June 9 on Kison Court, culminating a week of activities. Stringham will be joined by Salutatorian Emily Hogan and honor speakers Marci Jo Lanning and Travis Williams.

Waitsburg High School seniors Natasha Montgomery and Travis Williams have something to remember their final high school athletic appearances with medals from the State B Track & Field Meet. Montgomery, appearing in her third state meet, took fourth in the high jump in a jumping duel, and Williams can proudly wear medals for his contribution to the 4X100 and 4X400 relays.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 30, 1991

Wayne Peterson was named “Lion of the Year” by President Neil Henze for his work with the two Turkey Smoking projects this past year. Lion Guy McCaw is to receive a special President’s Appreciation Plaque for his work throughout the year.

Commencement exercises for the Class of 1991 of Waitsburg High school will be held Friday evening, May 31 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Honor speakers will be Valedictorian Angela Ferguson and Salutatorian Angel Adams. Honor speakers include Sandy Conover and Reuben Stokes.

For the first time in a good many seasons, Waitsburg has a Pony League team, sponsored in part by the Waitsburg Lions Club. Head coach of the squad is Dan Havens, assisted by J.E. McCaw and Bruce Abbey. Fourteen boys have turned out for the season.

Fifty Years Ago

June 2, 1966

The 63rd annual reunion and banquet of the WHS alumni Association met Saturday night with over 200 in attendance. Fred Zuger presided over the business meeting. Mrs. Kenneth Bickelhaupt was elected president for the coming year assisted by John Wood as vice president; Mrs. Jack Otterson, secretary; and Mrs. Shannon Hiatt, treasurer.

It must have been a confusing weekend for whoever was in charge of doing a rain dance clouds over this particular section of the country! The local ranchers have been doing a rain dance daily for the past month. And then here was a small committee representing the Days of Real Sport which requested fair weather for three days of parades, racing, and other activities. The solution was definitely in the nature of a compromise – it just got cold and blew dirt for all three days!

Seventy-Five Years Ago

June 6, 1941

Pat Hersch, a junior of the Waitsburg High School received the Scholastic Award this year based on scholarship, extracurricular activities and the Hutchens Code.

A total of 110 alums of WHS sat around long tables to participate in the excellent dinner arranged by the Pythian Sisters.

Miss Franklin Bateman, who is an excellent swimming instructor, has been engaged by the City Council as supervisor for this season.

Miss Mary Elizabeth Walker and Virgil Carpenter were married May 31 in Walla Walla.

Miss Lois Denney of Huntsville & George Canright were married May 31 in Huntsville.

Miss Bettie Lloyd and Berger Chase of Victor S. D. were married June 1 at the Methodist Church.

One Hundred Years Ago

June 9, 1916

Emory Hoover of this city, a junior at Whitman College, succeeded in breaking the northwest record in the low hurdles at Pullman last Saturday. He ran the 220 hurdles in 24.2.

About 20 boys and girls from the seventh and eighth grades in the Waitsburg schools drove up Jasper Mountain and walked down Thayer’s Grade, where they held a picnic. They left the wagon and belongings in a field on the Swinehart place and somebody forgot to shut the gate. A bunch of cows got in and were busy eating the harness, caps, coats, and apples when discovered.

Mrs. J. L. Schultz and daughter Alma left Thursday for Chicago, where Miss Alma is to be married June 6 to Walter Reigle of Rantoul, Ill.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

June 12, 1891

If you want your old tinware to look as bright as new, just apply common soda with a piece of moistened newspaper and then rub it with a dry piece.

Married in this city, June 9, Adolph Mellin and Miss Minnie Davis. The Times extends congratulations.

The hotel team ran away last Sunday at noon, coming from the U. P. depot. The hack was overturned and the inmates were thrown out, although none were hurt. One horse came out with a broken leg and had to be shot.

H.J. Woodworth and Teen Micklesen have the contract for hauling the brick for the new school house, at 60 cents per M.
