Waitsburg SCHOOL BOARD Update

November 18, 2015

Board members are: Ross Hamann, Christy House, Marilyn Johnson, Randy Pearson, and Greg Zuger. All were present.

First grade teacher Dinah Lindsey and kindergarten teacher Pam Beasley reported on their experience at the K-1 Literacy Retreat in Vancouver B. C. Both were enthusiastic and said that even after as many years as they have taught, they found changes they could make. They anticipate being able to have 90% of their students reading at grade level by second grade.

Board approved an out-of-endorsement assignment for Gabe Keifel, assigning him to teach elementary school with a secondary endorsement.

An eighth grade student presented a letter requesting the board allow eighth graders to wrestle at the high school level. Several high school team members spoke in support of the request. The board approved the request and it is anticipated that two or more eighth graders will wrestle for the high school.

Board held discussion regarding M&O levy and capital projects proposals.

Chad Adams was hired as assistant wrestling coach and Tally Ross was hired as assistant basketball coach. At last month’s meeting Roy Ramirez was hired as boys’ assistant basketball coach.

The Home and School Association is planning a dinner and movie night for families in January. Funds raised will be used to purchase school supplies for the elementary school.

The K-4 Winter Program will be held Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m.

The 5-12 Winter Concert will be Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.

Three board members, including incoming board member Russ Knopp will attend the Annual Conference of School Board Directors.

A retirement reception for board member Greg Zuger will take place at 6:30 p.m., prior to the Wed. Dec. 9 board meeting.
