Ballots Contain Twists for Some Dayton School Board Positions

DAYTON—According to Columbia County auditor Sharon Richter, election ballots should be mailed out by Thurs., Oct.15. Those ballots contain several twists that Columbia County voters should be aware of with regard to Position 2, and Position 3, on the Dayton School District board.

First, Marchand Hovrud’s name will appear on the ballot for school board Position 3, but because she has resigned from the board, Richter said that she will need to resign, again, after the election is certified.

Dan Butler has been by appointed by the board of directors to finish the rest of Hovrud’s term which ends in December (see accompanying article). However, Hovrud’s name appears on the November ballot, so the school board will need to re-appoint Butler (or someone else) to replace Hovrud again in January. That appointment will be for two years. The appointee will then be eligible to file for a two-year unexpired term in 2017.

Steve Martin did not file for re-election for Position 2 on the board this year. Richter said that Michelle McCleary has filed for that position, but McCleary said that she will resign because she is moving out of school board District 2.

According to Superintendent Doug Johnson the school board of directors will need to declare a vacancy for Position 2 and go through an application and selection process for that position, as was done with Hovrud’s position this month.
