Apply Now for Summer Youth, Teen Programs in Dayton

Outcome of grant applications won't stop popular summer recreation in community

Dayton fourth and fifth graders enjoyed the last full day of the 2014-2015 school year last Wednesday at the city park playing games such as tug-of-war. Fifth grader Lindsey Ellaboudy is first on the rope here, followed by fourth graders Lillian Sturgill and Norbert Cush.

DAYTON – Blue Mountain Counseling won't know for another week or so about the $25,000 State Farm grant it hoped to win with community support via online voting last month, but directors are determined not to let the outcome of the grant stop them from providing another year of summer recreation for local children.

"Dimita (director of BMC) said one way or another we will have the Summer Youth program because this community needs it," said Laura Tolman, prevention coordinator with Blue Mountain Counseling. "So we are doing everything we can to make it happen."

Tolman is hoping other grants come through to help pay for three or four portable air conditioners. "It gets awfully hot in the elementary school rooms in summer," she said.

Families can sign up now for both the Summer Youth Program and Teen Scene at the BMC office at 221 E. Washington Avenue in Dayton.

The Summer Youth Program is for children entering first through sixth grades in the fall. The program begins June 22 and runs through July 31. The cost is $75 for the first child and $60 for each additional child.

Teen Scene, for youth too old to participate in the Summer Youth Program, begins with an information meeting on June 23 at 1 p.m. in the Dayton Elementary multipurpose room.

Teens should sign up early. Applications are available at Blue Mountain Counseling to be able to attend the various trips planned – including the Clarkston Waterpark, Cougar Laser Tag in Pullman, a Walla Walla Sweets game and more. A $50 fee is required to attend out-of-town activities at registration.

In-town activities for teens include golfing, Night Glow Frisbee, movie at the Liberty Theater, gym time, crafts and Flick 'n' Float (movies at the city pool after hours).
