WP hurdler Kobie Brown leads a trio of Cardinals in the hurdles at a meet in Walla Walla earlier this year. To Brown's right is fellow senior Owen Lanning. In the rear is sophomore Landon Callas. Brown Lanning and Callas all made strong showings in the hurdles events at the state Division 2B meet in Cheney over the weekend.

CHENEY – The Waitsburg-Prescott boys' track team finished a strong sixth in the 2B Division at the Washington State track and field final meet at Eastern Washington University last weekend.

Senior Kobie Brown lead his team with a 2nd place in the 300 meter hurdles and 5th in the 100 hurdles. Brown also anchored WP's 7th-place 4X400 meter relay team.

Owen Lanning, also a senior, placed 4th in the triple jump, 5th in the long jump and 7th in the 110 meter hurdles. Lanning also competed in the 300 meter hurdles, but was disqualified during the preliminaries by judges on a technical error on one of the hurdles.

"Owen is a track guy and worked very hard all season for this opportunity at State," said WP Coach Jeff Bartlow. "He had a great season and will be missed."

As a result of Lanning's DQ, WP sophomore Landon Callas qualified for the eighth and last spot in the finals, and then had an exceptional race to finish 6th.

In the 4X400 relay, the WP boys team made the finals and finished 7th. The team consisted of Travis Crockett, Tyler Shafer, Callas and Brown. The 4X100 team of Joe Leamy, ReSean Crockett, Callas and Travis Crockett failed to make the finals.

"But, not one of them are seniors and will be back to hopefully find a spot on the podium next year," Bartlow said of the 4X100 team.

WP junior Brandon Penner had an outstanding meet in the discus, finishing 7th, with a throw of 145 feet, 4 inches – 10 feet beyond his previous personal best. "He really stepped up," Bartlow said of Penner, "and that was a highlight, no doubt."

WP sophomore Emily Adams qualified for state in the 3200 meter run and the triple jump. She made the finals in both and placed 6th in the 3200 and 7th in the TJ.

"She had an outstanding season and, as a sophomore, has a lot to look forward to," Bartlow said of Adams.
