WAITSBURG – WP Heavyweight wrestler Tristan Newman got off to a great start at the 2015 State Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome on Friday, Feb. 20, but failed to maintain enough momentum to take a spot on the podium.

Newman took Marcos Perales of South Bend by pin in 1:52 on Friday afternoon, before losing to Chad Edwards of Tonasket in a close 5-4 decision on Friday night. Newman was eliminated on Saturday afternoon when he fell to Daniel Fruh of North Beach by pin in 2:11. Fruh took fourth place overall, when he fell to Mikey Hernandez of Ward in a bid for 3rd/4th standing.

"Tristan had a very successful season. He wrestled with some shoulder pain that followed with him from the football season. He has qualified for State three years in a row and is already planning for next year. He will be back at the Tacoma Dome with his eyes set on the top spot on the podium," said Coach Lanny Adams. "I'm hopeful we will be taking more than one to state next year," he added.
