WAITSBURG – In a war of wits, Waitsburg once again took first place in the 2B District 9 Regional Knowledge Bowl meet on Feb. 23, securing a spot at the state meet. This will be Waitsburg's fourth consecutive State meet and the last for senior and team leader Emma Philbrook.

The WHS Knowledge Bowl team competed with strengths and smarts against 2B local rivals Dayton and DeSales High Schools. Led by senior Philbrook and junior Stuart Walsh, Waitsburg walked off with the win scoring 103 points. Dayton placed second with 81 points and DeSales earned 54 points. Other Waitsburg team members are Gillian Pope, Robert Walsh, Cade Branson, and Korben Duffy. Brad Green, who has coached the team for the last 16 years, says he is looking forward to another trip to the state competition.

Dayton Knowledge Bowl coach Doug Yenney said he was pleased with his team's performance as well. "This is one of the best teams I've had in my eight years of coaching Knowledge Bowl," he said.

Members of Dayton's Team One KB team are (l to r): Coach Doug Yenney, Ian Smay, Zech Bryan, Sarah Phillips, Matthew Warren and Carlos Oribio.

Dayton High School has strong participation, and Yenney said they have the depth to bring three or four strong teams. Though this year's team was senior-heavy, Yenney says there are lots of strong freshman and sophomores coming up and is optimistic that Dayton will make it to the State meet in the near future. Dayton team members this year include: Zach Bryan, Matthew Warren, Ian Smay, Carlos Oribio and Sarah Phillips.

The Waitsburg team will attend this year's State meet at Arlington High School, north of Seattle, on March 14. Green said the team will arrive on Friday and will enjoy some time sightseeing in Seattle before the meet begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.
