Now It’s Up to Voters

WAITSBURG - Most voters in the Touchet Valley received their ballots in the mail on Friday for this year's general election. Campaigning in Walla Walla and Columbia Counties is winding down, as voters prepare to make their decisions.

According to the Walla Walla County Auditor's office, there are more than 31,000 registered voters in the county. Columbia County has a little over 2,600 registered voters.

Turnout for the primary election in Walla Walla County was just over 43%. In Columbia County, the primary election turnout was almost exactly 50%.

General Election turnout is expected to be much higher. In the 2010 general election, which featured most of the same offices up for election, turnout in Walla Walla County was just under 72%. Turnout in Columbia County for that year's general election was almost 85%, with nearly 2,200 votes cast.

To be counted, mailed ballots must be postmarked no later than November 4. Ballots can be delivered to local courthouses until 8 p.m. November 4.

Ballots for this year's election will be processed starting this week. Tabulation will continue on November 4, until 8 p.m. Preliminary election results will be posted on the respective county websites shortly after 8 p.m.
