WP Wrestler Dejay Lalka celebrates after his first career win, beating a Wa-Hi wrestler on points.

PRESCOTT - WP wrestlers had two meets last week where grapplers Tristan Newman and Dejay Lalka celebrated personal successes. The team traveled to Springdale on Saturday, where Newman beat long-time competitor Mark Dituri of Mary Walker for the first time in two years. At Monday's home meet here, Dejay Lalka, who wrestles with just one leg, brought the crowd to tears as he secured the first win of his wrestling career.

At the Springdale meet, 138 lb. David Just won two and lost two, all by pin. At 145 lbs., Dejay Lalka lost two by pin. At 170 lbs., Tyler Brooks won and lost one by decision and lost one by pin. In the 285 lb. class, Tristan Newman won two by pin and Tyler Hoffman lost one by pin.

Coach Lanny Adams said the highlight of the meet was Newman's win against Mark Dituri in the finals. "This is Tristan and Mark's sixth time wrestling in the past two years. He finally broke through and beat him. It was nice to see happen," said Adams.

WP faced off against Wa-Hi and Columbia-Burbank at Monday's home meet. Newman lost two matches by pin. Just lost one match by decision and took his second by pin. Lalka lost a match by pin and won one by decision. Brooks won by decision. Newman and Hoffman each won two matches by pin.

"All the wrestlers performed well. There was some smart wrestling going on tonight," said Adams. "The highlight of the night was the second match between Dejay and Wa-Hi's Cameron Bennett. Dejay worked very hard and kept moving and working for moves. At the end of the third round, Dejay had no idea he had outscored his opponent and secured the first win of his wrestling career. He was very excited about that victory and I think this win will stick in his mind for quite some time."

WP wrestlers travel to Northwest Christian this Saturday.
