Lady Cards Fall to Touchet and Pomeroy

December 18, 2014

WP senior Paige Wood (13) put up a shot over a Pomeroy defender when they faced the Pirates at home earlier this month.

WAITSBURG - The Lady Cards basketball team lost two non-conference road games last week, falling to Touchet, 22-68, on Dec. 9 and Pomeroy, 17-63, on Dec. 12.

Despite the losses, coach JT Elsey is encouraged by the team's steady improvement in play and teamwork. Elsey said the team played hard in the Touchet game and made headway in working as a team. "What I expect for them to do game to game, is to improve little by little," he said.

Leading scorers for the Touchet game were Paige Wood, with eight points and six rebounds, and Kassidy Kuykendall with six points. "Touchet has a really good point guard (Cierra Jo McKeown) that was hard to stop - she scored over half the Touchet points and had many assists that led to scores," said Elsey.

The Cards took their second run at Pomeroy this season, playing what Elsey said was their best quarter to date. "The game showed the biggest improvement so far and was really good to watch," he said. "The girls did a good job pressuring the ball and worked hard on their press. Although still need to work on rebounding and working together on defense."

Freshman Tayler Jones led W-P with five points and three rebounds. "It's great to see a freshman step up and score when it's needed," said Elsey. Jones was followed by Analise Salazar who grabbed four points. Paige Wood led the team with six rebounds.

"Pomeroy is a very tough team to play. They are very tall and fast up and down the floor," said Elsey.

The Lady Cards play four games this week. They were to play in Milton-Freewater on Tuesday, then play home matches against WWVA Thursday and Weston-McEwan Friday. On Saturday, the team travels to Asotin.
