December 18, 2014

Dayton's Madison Mings showed off her left-handed dribble against a defender in a game in Dayton earlier this month.

DAYTON - The Dayton girls' basketball team woke up at halftime and cruised to any easy win over Pomeroy at home on Dec. 9, 41-22. The win gives the Lady 'Dogs a 4-0 record with four more games to play before the Christmas break.

After taking a 17-14 lead at the half, Dayton shut out the Pirates in the third quarter and outscored the opponents 24-8 in the second half.

"I thought again our effort was really good," said Dayton coach Clayton Strong. "We had some lapses especially in the second quarter that hurt us, but the girls to their credit got it corrected."

Strong said he was particularly pleased with the teamwork his team showed. "I also thought that we shared the basketball fairly well as evident with 10 assists on 14 made field goals," he said. "We do have some work to do with some of our execution on the offensive end, but when we needed to be good, I thought we got the job done."

For the game, sophomore Shayla Currin lead the scoring with 12 points. Madison Mings had 10 points, including two three-pointers, and Jenna Phillips also had a strong game on offense with nine points.

The Dayton front line also had a strong game on the boards, as Mings pulled down 11 rebounds, Josilyn Fullerton nine and Currin eight. Sarah Phillips and Lexie Ramirez each had three assists, and Mings had two.

On Tuesday, Dayton was to host Riverview, and then travel to Tri-Cities Prep Friday. Dayton closes out the year hosting DeSales on Saturday and Colfax on Dec. 23. Game times are 6 p.m. for all games, except for DeSales, which starts at 5 p.m.
