Adams and Callas Run Strong

November 13, 2014

WP's Emily Adams and Landon Callas strike a pose for social media after competing at the state championship meet in Cheney on Saturday.

PASCO - WP harriers Emily Adams and Landon Callas competed in the State 1B/2B cross county championships at Sun Willows golf course here on Saturday, Nov. 8. "Both runners represented themselves and the school well and have every reason to feel proud of the growth and accomplishment they've had this season," said cross country coach Dan Nechodom.

This was sophomore Adams' second time to the high school state meet. She covered the course in 20:45.09, finishing 18th against a field of 66 racers. In 2013, as a freshman, Adams placed 32nd on the same course, with a time of 22:10.88. First place went to Tracy Melville with a time of 18:25.40.

"Emily lined up directly behind Tracy Melville of Lin-Ritzville, the eventual winner. She took off with the gun and was up and over the first hill, and out of view in mere seconds," said Nechodom. "She ran a little slower than at district, but so did most other top District 7 and 9 runners, so the course may have been a little slower. I was pleased with her effort and performance, and am looking forward to a great report from her race in Boise next week."

This was the first year to the State Championship for first year X-C runner, sophomore Landon Callas who placed 41st among 137 men runners. Callas ran the 5K in 17:53.20. Asotin's Chandler Tiegen placed first with a time of 15:41.10.

"Landon had just the right level of jitters and nervousness to get him ready to roll. It was fun to watch him soaking in the whole experience; being proud to have made it to State in his first season," said Nechodom. "Since his first race he's liked to shoot out to the front of the pack at the start so he could really stride it out. He didn't disappoint with this race, stretching his long legs with the best in the state as they shot over the first hill. He ran with a consistently strong pace, moving up on a few runners over the last mile, then pushing past a few extras in the last few meters."

Adams travels to Boise, Ida. on Nov. 15 where she will compete in the Nike Cross Nationals Northwest on the Eagle Island X-C course. If she places in the top 20 in the non-school related event, she will qualify for Nationals, to be held in Portland this year.
