Local Schools Celebrate Homecoming

October 16, 2014

DAYTON - For more than 100 years, schools across the nation have been celebrating Homecoming, honoring school alumni who often return to their alma mater to reconnect with people, places and traditions during events all week culminating with the Friday night football game and high school dance on Saturday.

This week, Dayton High School continues the tradition with activities, games, parades, and, of course, the Homecoming Dance.

The week began with Powder Puff football and a barbecue, followed by volleyball Tuesday and soccer on Wednesday.

High School freshmen compete in the annual Lip Sync Thursday at 2 p.m.; the entire community is invited to the high school volleyball game in the gym at 5 p.m. followed at 8 p.m. with Stud Volleyball, which pits male high school students against each other on the court.

Friday students vote during the school day for Mr. Football and Homecoming Queen, who will be honored during half time at the Homecoming Game versus St. John Endicott starting at 7 p.m. A firework show will kick off the game, and a parade of princesses in student-constructed and judged "princess" golf carts will accompany the introduction to the Homecoming Court at the half.

The Homecoming Dance takes place from 9 p.m. to midnight on Saturday in the Youth Building at the Columbia County Fairgrounds.
