Basketball Season Has Begun

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg High School basketball teams had a busy first week, playing three away games. They traveled to Pomeroy on December 5, went to WWVA on December 7, and played at Touchet on December 9. They will play their first home game on Friday, December 15.

Jayton Gleason scored seventeen points in the junior varsity game at Pomeroy. Tyler Coulston scored two points, and Rollin Carpenter had seven rebounds in the 64-19 loss.

At WWVA, Teegan Kenney had two steals and three rebounds in the 50-22 loss.

The JV team played only two quarters at Touchet and lost 29-15. Logan Seal led the team with 8 points, Coulston scored 3, and Carpenter and Trace Nesje scored 2 points each.

The Waitsburg varsity girls are young this year, with only two players with high school basketball experience.

"They are getting better and growing every single game," said Head Coach JJ Calzadillas. "For only having six players right now, they are showing mental and physical toughness. I am really proud of how they are playing," he added.

At Pomeroy, Alyssa Hollingsworth scored 5 points and had three rebounds. Abbi Paolino scored three and had three steals. Makenna Barron scored 2 points in the 52-10 loss.

Paolino scored eight points and rebounded nine at WWVA. Hollingsworth scored eight and had two steals, Cheri Mathews scored two points, and Kadance Tiner had six rebounds in the 49-18 loss.

The young Cardinal team scored first at Touchet when Paolino hit a three-point shot. Touchet won the game 53-24. Hollingsworth led the Cardinals with 14 points, Paolino scored 10, and Sarah Daves had four rebounds. Victoria Whitmore played tough defense as the team improved on positioning and communication.

Blake French scored 11 points in the boys varsity game, and Ryland Kilts added 10 in the 58 to 31 loss at Pomeroy. Logan Seal scored 5, Lucas VanHoose scored 4 points and rebounded three, and Jack Karl scored one.

Kilts lit up the scoreboard with 27 points at WWVA. The Cardinals won the game 51-42. French scored 12, Reuben Yutzy 7, VanHoose 4, and Wyaitt Booth scored 1 point. Kilts and French had six rebounds each, and Yutzy had two steals in the win.
