Graduation cost the Waitsburg Cardinal girls' basketball team only two players and that experienced group – most of whom are coming off a sixth-place finish in state volleyball – are hoping that the season will conclude in March with more than just a repeat to the state. But for now, according to Coach Jerry Baker, the team's goal is simply to defend its district championship. The Cardinals kick off the 1998-99 season with a nonleague opener with Rosalia tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 4, at the Waitsburg Gymnasium. Jayvee action stars at 4:30 with varsity taking the floor at 6:30 p.m. Second-year Coach Baker sees the team's biggest challenge in the tough December schedule in which the Cards face five Whitman County teams and 1A Dayton twice before the holiday break. "We won't have much time to relax," Baker said. "If we stay healthy we should do okay."

Mike DeCoria, who quarterbacked the Redbirds, was named as defensive back, and Roger Miller was picked for the first string offensive line. Shane Donnely, linebacker, received an honorable mention for his play on the defensive unit. Connell, conference winner, got seven players on the unit: Jamie Person (SE), Curt Didier (TE), Kent Mackay (QB), and Thane Davidson (RB); Mark Cochran (DT), Elizar Gonzales (LB), and Randy Adom (DB). Scott Brannan (IL), Toby Hatley (RB), Ross Swan (DE), Craig Culbertson (LB), and Matt Hall (DB) were named from the Colfax Bulldogs.
