The Times - Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

YAKIMA – The Dayton-Waitsburg softball team grabbed the third seed from District 5/6 in the state tournament this weekend, after going 2-1 at the regional tournament here last weekend. They are scheduled to begin the tournament Friday at 9 a.m. against Adna.

In the first regional playoff game Saturday, DW overpowered Liberty Bell, 9-1. The team built a 3-1 lead after four innings, before bringing in four more in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Megan Robins, Ariel Sandau and Neylan Bryan led their team with three hits apiece. On the mound, Robins gave up 13 hits, but her team held Liberty Bell to a single run.

DW next faced league rival Kittitas, and dropped the game, 15-4. Pitcher Sadie Seney struggled in the third inning, as Kittitas racked up 12 runs in the frame on the way to the win. The game was called after five innings on the 10-run rule.

The team was held to seven his in the game, including two each by Tatumn Laughery and Scully Castorena. Castorena’s total included a home run.

Next, DW faced another EWAC opponent, Liberty Christian, and held on for a 10-6 win to gain that third seed. DW built a 7-0 lead after two innings, but saw LC chip away at it, closing the score to 8-6 after six innings. Two runs in the top of the seventh sealed the deal for DW.

DW had 17 hits in the game, including three each by Laughery, Sandau and Bryan. Robins gave up 13 hits in a complete game performance.
