RICHLAND – At the Richland Invite cross-country meet on Friday, Waitsburg's Emily Adams had a strong race, finishing 3rd out of 108 runners in the Division II varsity heat.

"Emily finished very strong and solid," said Waitsburg coach Ann Adams. "She got boxed in a bit at the start but handled the pressure, working her way up to the front of the pack where she just continued to pick up her pace."

Emily Adams is greeted by former Richland coach Max Jensen. Jensen initiated the Richland Invite in 1969. This year Richland dedicated the meet to him and in the future it will be called the Max Jensen Memorial invite. Before moving to Richland, Coach Jensen competed in track and XC at WSU. He started the Richland XC team in 1963 and led them to multiple state championships. He was inducted into the Washington State XC coaches hall of fame in 1994. He awarded medals to the top three finishers on Saturday.

Adams' time of 19:06.75 was a season record for three miles. She beat her time on the Richland course last year by 42 seconds.

Skylar Wood ran the Division II varsity race for the boys and finished in a time of 19:20.02. He placed 109th out of 135 runners.

"Skylar did a great job, another large heat," said Adams. "He finished very strong, passing a few other runners in the final stretch."

Daltin Lambert ran in the freshman/sophomore race, placing 139th out of 432 runners with a Personal Record for a three-mile course of 19:46.88.

"He paced himself well and fought hard for a good spot," Adams said of Lambert. "I am very pleased with how well he handled the pressure of such a large race."

Tom House, Joe Leamy and TJ Morrison all ran in the Junior/Senior race for the Cardinals. Leamy finished with a time of 21:37.43, for 169th place out of 232 runners. House had a time of 22:11.15, for 182nd, and Morrison finished in 24:10.15, for 213th.

"Joe ran his best race this season," said Adams. "He looked strong and solid. He was smart and kept moving up."

The Cardinal XC team travels to Wildhorse Golf Course in Pendleton Thursday for the Kyle Burnside Memorial Invite.
