Dayton's senior catcher Madison Mings waits for a throw to home during a game against Prescott earlier this year. Dayton qualified for the state softball championships with a win over Colfax on Saturday.

SPOKANE – Dayton's softball team will be making their seventh appearance in the past 10 years at the State 2B softball tournament, as they won their opening game against Colfax 6-1 on Saturday here, before inclement weather forced the rest of the day's games to be postponed until the 24th.

Dayton opened the game strong with a three-run first inning, as Kellie Moore and Madison Mings both had RBI singles following hits from Heidi Dobbs and Mia Becker in the bottom of the first frame.

Dayton pitcher Savannah McFarland had a strong hold on the Colfax offense, as the opponents' only breakthrough came in top of the fourth on an RBI single. McFarland would finish the game with only one hit allowed over seven innings.

The Lady Bulldogs added three more runs in bottom of the fourth, as Moore added another RBI and Scully Castorena got one more before Megan Robins scored on a Colfax error for Dayton's final score.

Notable performers included Moore, who went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs, and McFarland, who recorded 11 strikeouts.

The strong showing from the Dayton ballplayers in the first game guaranteed them a spot in the State tournament in Yakima. "Terry (Dayton Coach Terry Robins) and I are very proud of this team," said assistant coach Desirae Jones. "They have had some struggles but they are playing their best ball right now. This is when we want them to peak."

The Bulldogs faced league rivals Asotin in an afternoon game, which was purely for seeding purposes. However, the elements were not on their side, as the game was suspended in the bottom of the second inning. Dayton was up 1-0 when it was decided that the rain was too much, and were about to take their second round of hacks.

The Dayton-Asotin seeding game was to resume in Spokane at the Merkel Complex on Tuesday. The Bulldogs were to have another seeding game in the afternoon, following the conclusion of their matchup with the Panthers.

"The big pressure to get to State is off, now our games tomorrow are just for pride," said Jones.
