Dayton Cancels Baseball Season

DAYTON – On Tuesday, Dayton High School made the decision to cancel its 2015 boys’ baseball season. According to Athletic Director Heather Clarys, the difficult decision was made because too few boys turned out to field a team.

According to school sources, only eight boys turned out for the first practice, including four 8th-graders. Between 12 and 14 players would be needed to keep the season going.

When asked if the Dayton boys who signed up would be able to join a neighboring team, such as Waitsburg-Prescott, Superintendent Doug Johnson that that could not likely happen, since it would make the combined schools too large for 2B.

“At this late juncture it is doubtful a decision of this nature would be made,” he said. “The likely scenario, we hope, would be the kids would turn out for track or golf, two programs we are offering.”

The Dayton baseball team was scheduled to play 13 games this season, including games in the SE District 9 2B league. Those games have all been canceled.
